Technology has advanced dramatically over the last decade, with one of the most common office appliances being the laser printer. The quality of a laser printer is top notch; however there are some downfalls that come with such a high quality printer. Quite simply, the laser printer uses laser to form patterns of dots on a light sensitive drum, which attracts the toner, or ink. The toner is transferred to printer paper and printed using a heat function inside the printer.

In opposition to a traditional digital printer, the laser printer produces a higher resolution and quality document. Digital printers are usually found in the home because they are inexpensive and great for light printing projects. They aren't ideal for business because the cost of toner can quickly add up, as it takes a lot of ink to print a single document.

Laser printers are the most common choice of printer in a business environment. One reason being the high quality, as well as the cost per print being much lower than a digital printer. Some other advantages of a laser printer are that they are practically silent. Very little noise is made during the printing process which doesn't disturb other workers, especially in a business environment where the printer is communal. Laser printers are much smaller in size than a digital printer which saves space on a desk or work area.

However, laser printers do present a few disadvantages as well. Because of the laser printing method, some documents may be delivered damp and need time to fully dry. Because the printing process is such high quality, it takes a bit longer to receive a printed document from a laser printer than it does from a standard digital printer, making it not as simple to print multiple page documents. Because of the imaging drum and laser technology stored inside the laser printer, the weight is heavier than a traditional printer.
